Niagara Falls

Lori and I went to Niagara Falls for a day trip.  They’re renovating the tourist trap there… but the falls are still beautiful.

It looks like they’ve been fixing things up on the American side.  The town of Niagara falls is still pretty unremarkable, but the falls attractions are getting better.  There’s a cantilever viewing platform next to the Rainbow bridge.  The visitors center looks like a nice place, almost a state park.  Everyone’s always said, go to the American side for the view, and the Canadian side for the action.

I’d like to go back in the winter.  the flow is reduced, and the walls of the canyon are clad in ice.  The falls are a shadow of their historic power.  Only a quarter to a third of the original volume flows over the edge.  The rest is diverted to power generators.  I stood on a platform at the bottom of the falls trying to imagine five times the water.  It’ll never happen again, I think.  The power stations on the Niagara river make the falls as much a technological wonder as a geological one.

I went there as a teen. We did the “Cave of the Winds” tour and donned the special raincoats as we walked behind the falls.
