My Favorite Tree

This is my favorite tree in Mendon Ponds Park.  It doesn’t look like much this time of year, but it’s my favorite because of what it does in the fall.  here let me show you…

It’s the first tree to light up when the colors change in the fall.  Janet and I were walking in the park a couple weeks ago, and I tried to point out the tree to her.  It didn’t have any leaves on it, so it was hard to spot next to the other trees on that side of the pond.  I’ve been working on a seasonal picture set of the tree for the last couple years.  I’ve tried to take a picture from the same spot at different seasons.  I still have the Spring and Summer pictures to take.  I’ll see if I can get one of those taken this year.

I’m sorry I’ve been in a rut lately. My neighbor across the stream just called to make sure I wasn’t “dead on the living room carpet” She was nice about it, and we talked for a little while. I recounted my month. At my last dentist visit, he said that he needed to fix a cavity on my last molar, but that pesky wisdom tooth had a cavity in it as well. A good enough excuse for him. My dentist has been trying to get me to agree to have my wisdom teeth removed for a couple years now. I’ve resisted in a futile attempt to avoid pain. Well, I’ve got it now. Between the referral, the oral surgeon’s schedule, and more than one annoying medical office worker, those two cavities have had 4 months to prosper. I’m reduced to keeping toothache cream, dental floss, and a brush with me all the time. the appointment is next week. the strangest part of it for me is that the wisdom tooth lies right next to a bundle of nerves. When there’s a problem with a wisdom tooth, the nerves above it can get short circuited. Occasionally, a healthy tooth will ache for no reason. My cavities aren’t fighting fair.

The cat on the left must have had a toothache, too. She lunged out at me right after this picture. I should have just skipped that cage, my mistake.

I got a ticket for fishing without a license back in 2005. I was quietly outraged by the whole thing. I’ve gotten a fishing license every year since I came to New York in 1986. I sold my truck in the spring of 2005. With no way to tow the boat, I didn’t pick up a fishing license that year. A friend asked me if I wanted to go fishing one weekend, and I went without remembering the missing license. I fished for 30 minutes in 2005, and got a $200 ticket. I got a license in 2006, and didn’t go fishing once. That made things even in my eyes. Not so much in New York State’s eyes, though. An environmental officer stopped by the house on my birthday to talk about the ticket. He kept saying things like “By all rights, I should have you in cuffs and drive you back down to the court. The judge is in session right now.” I wrote a check right there and drove down Friday to hand deliver the check to the clerk’s office.

“Sport” on the right is my favorite this week. He’s been in the shelter for a while. He had stopped grooming himself, so the volunteers put him in one of the offices. With almost constant attention, he’s getting better. I brushed out two handfuls of fur before taking my pictures. Amber kept him company while I was away. When I got back to the office, another volunteer was brushing out another handful. He’s a big old lap cat, super friendly, he’ll be alright.

This little fuzzball was my favorite this week. He just wanted to play. He licked my face, too ;) He’s about 6 weeks old.

I had 8 ferrets to take pictures of today. It’s hard taking pictures of these slinky little fellows. They’re curious about everything, so they want to check me out, check the camera out, and then run around the room. Four or five kids were watching me take pictures. It must have been pretty funny to see me pick up a ferret and put it back in the cage just in time for another one jump out. I eventually got all the pictures and went on to take pictures of the cats. Smelling like a ferret made me a sniff magnet for the cats the rest of the morning.

The kittens are coming.  As spring gets going, the holding areas in the back have more kittens every week.  This crew came in over the weekend.  They all have blue eyes.  Mom is a calico mix.

Meekoo (right) went to a foster home last week.  I’ll miss him, he is a really sweet cat.  Since he’s not in the Information Technology office, Amber can wait there for me again.

On the Schmap

This picture was chosen to appear in a Schmap guide to Paris. Link I think I would have chosen a different picture, but this one is the second picture in the set…  I can’t blame an overworked editor for taking the path of least resistance.

I would have gone with this one, or the next one in the set, but I’m glad to be included in the guide.  Here are some more pictures of the Arc De Triomphe:

Spring in Mendon Ponds

Amber and I went over to Mendon Ponds last weekend to check on Spring’s progress.  With the warmer weather, the trees are starting to get back in gear after the long winter.

Not every customer goes away happy… This cat was none too pleased with my picture taking.  Cats judge our attitude by how open our eyes are.  Semi closed eyes mean that we’re comfortable with the cat, so… you can suppose that the cat won’t have a reason to be mad.  I try to keep my eyes mostly closed when I open a cage…  Then I stick this giant lens in there and take a double flash picture.  I’m surprised that more cats don’t get upset when I come calling.

This little lady was my favorite this week.  She was a little stand off ish at first, but after she had a good sniff, and nibble, she was really friendly.  She was a little nippy, but not bitey.

Yup, that’s a pigeon.  Every couple years, someone finds a pigeon on their yard and brings it in thinking that it’s someone’s pet.   The little fellow on the right came in with matted fur all over the place.  he’s chubby, so someone’s been feeding him.  He still managed to pick up a bunch of fleas.  He was in the middle of a shave when I came in.  He had a pretty bare bottom, which I didn’t take pictures of ;)

Here are the petting goats.  Amber and I lingered by the fence for a while, and they came over to take a look.  Amber was making this whiny barky kind of noise.  There’s an Amber’s-eye-view, too ;)
